Characters you have in the game: Not applicable!!
Character Name: Rei. He also contains the personalities of four others, named Jin, Ken, Aya and Yuu. His Super name was "Zero", but he doesn't remember it.
Character Canon: PIECE ~Kioku no Kakera~
Canon Background:
So pretty much the entirety of Rei's trope in this movie is to be the crazy amnesic guy with a bunch of personalities. He doesn't remember his past, nor do any of his other personalities, and the worst part is that we never find out, either. But I'll go over what we /do/ know, anyway.
PIECE takes place in a nondescript Japanese city that is probably Tokyo but might not actually be, it's sort of hard to tell and I'm not the greatest at Japanese geography by senseless skyline montages that have nothing to do with the plot. It centers around a reporter named Chino Tomoki, who also has memory issues because his girlfriend got turned to stone three years prior to the start of the movie. That's rough, buddy. When a case crops up in which a young man is turned to stone in the same fashion as Tomoki's girlfriend Haruka, he cleans himself up, stops drinking, and goes chasing leads with all the fervor of a shounen manga hero.
This is where he meets Rei. As we are later made aware, "Rei" is probably not even his real name, it's just the alias he has adopted since he doesn't know his real name (the name "Rei" is written with the kanji meaning "Zero"). Rei is a cameraman, who takes impressive photos of various happenings around the city and then sells them online to newspapers and magazines to make a living. He lives in a van that is entirely too large for Japanese streets and isn't even a Japanese make, and there is a high likelihood that he doesn't even have a license to operate this vehicle, seeing as he doesn't even have a known full name.
When Rei and Tomoki team up to uncover the truth, not only about Haruka's death but about something that Rei calls PIECE, they become an unstoppable force that even an elite member of the Special Police commends. Through a series of events, it is discovered that PIECE is some kind of scientific experiment wherein the people of the world with any form of special ability are injected with some unknown substance. This substance then becomes a part of their body, is untraceable, and flows out of their body to crystallize when they die. It is for the purpose of making use of these people's unusual abilities. PIECE effectively siphons their powers so that when they die, they leave their bodies and solidify into these funny little metallic rocks that can later be put into someone else's body so the same power can be reused. It is never expressly stated one way or another whether Rei and all of his personalities also contain PIECE, but one of the personalities is known to and another makes a strong allusion toward the concept of them all having it.
Long and extremely confusing story made somewhat concise, murders start occurring around the city wherein guys are being turned to stone exactly like Haruka had been. Upon further investigation, it is discovered that a woman named Kitamura Futaba is responsible. Rei briefly comes into contact with her, and part of his left wrist is turned to stone. The scientist personality within him, Ken, proceeds to explain that the skin is not actually stone, but made necrotic by nutrients being removed from the skin too rapidly for it to repair itself. It is later discovered that Futaba, along with Tomoki's girlfriend Haruka and one other woman all shared this ability, and Rei and Tomoki take to calling them the "Gorgon Sisters".
It is not until nearly the very end of the film that the full truth is exposed about the situation, wherein an experimental project called PIECE MAKER had implanted PIECE into three young women (Kitamura Futaba, Gomi Haruka, and Shirokawa Momoko) who were claimed to be being treated for pigment anomalies in their skin. These anomalies were stated to be in reference to having extremely pale skin, a condition weakening their UV resistance. All three girls, as well as Rei, are mentioned several times throughout the film to have very pale skin, in the same phrasing that is used in regard of the pigment anomalies that were treated by PIECE MAKER. It is later discovered that the girls also had some form of genetic disease that caused them to age far too rapidly, resulting in their "Gorgon" ability of sucking nutrients out of others to survive. It is never concretely stated if this Gorgon ability was something they all shared from birth, or if it was an ability implanted into them by PIECE. Just before the end of the movie, it is revealed that Aya, the kind-hearted female personality of Rei, was actually the spirit of Shirokawa Momoko, one of the three Gorgon Sisters. It is never explained why her spirit went to Rei after she died just after Haruka, but it is slightly alluded that perhaps she chose Rei in hopes of being able to later protect Tomoki from PIECE MAKER's plans.
And that's... actually about it. Rei and Tomoki jump through several flaming hoops to discover all this about PIECE (with the help of Tomoki's more recent and not-stone girlfriend, Arisa), and about Haruka's death (which was tragic and involved some other crazy power guy taking mental control of Tomoki and having him kill her with a syringe of stuff that turned her to stone), and... then Tomoki and Rei part ways, Tomoki claiming he's taking some time off to go bang his not-stone girlfriend. It's left very open-ended, Rei with intent to continue to research PIECE and hopefully uncover truths about his own past, and claiming that they will see Tomoki again.
The approximate four people that I am aware of having seen this film are still hoping for a sequel so we can understand what the crap is going on.
Omegafriends Background:
Rei will mostly stay the same when ported to Venture City. He is effectively being brought from a "point" in the storyline of PIECE prior to knowledge of PIECE MAKER being made available, so all he actually knows is that this wacky rock thing shows up when people die sometimes, and all five of him have a memory that this thing is called PIECE.
Embellishing more on that to allow to to cohesively make sense; I figure there is a Venture City equivalent of the PIECE MAKER project, if not PIECE MAKER itself, and Rei was involved but has no recollection of the events. Rei was effectively turned into a Super, likely for some kind of nefarious plot surrounding taking people with unusual abilities but no actual "Super Powers" and turning them into artificially-created Supers. I'm leaving this all very vague since Rei doesn't remember it and doesn't ever have to, unless it's a plot idea that for some reason interests mods and/or players that could be played with.
So at some point probably three-ish years ago, Rei had PIECE (or whatever Venture City equivalent there is) implanted into his body. He was given several small-scale abilities this way, but lost all memories of himself prior to being implanted with them and of them specifically. For this reason, his subconscious created not only the name "Rei", but four additional personalities to take on the use of each individual power set. Rei doesn't actually know he's a Super, and he is never actually conscious of using his powers. They just sort of... Happen, and he doesn't think anything of it.
So effectively, he got experimented on, got some special powers, no longer remembers who he is or was, has some extra personalities, and lives in a van. His life is pretty average, really. He still works freelance in photography, likely often working alongside Chino Tomoki and just kind of being a several-personalitied hobo with a van and a lot of neat talents.
Personality:
Rei is definitely the dominant personality amongst the five of them, for the simple fact that he was the original personality and they all reside within his body. He doesn't remember his exact age or birth date, nor does he remember a full name or how he even came upon the name "Rei", but he and his other four personalities all share a single memory that the strange rock-like object they have had in their possession for as long as they can remember is called PIECE. Rei himself is a reasonably mild individual, probably in his early to mid twenties, who speaks softly and neither politely nor coarsely. He thinks very little of himself, though not in a self-deprecating fashion, just that he has never thought he has much of any personal value. This may or may not have anything to do with the fact that the name "Rei", as previously mentioned, is written with the kanji for the word "Zero" in Japanese [零] (which is where his Super name was derived from, though he does not know this). He has a knack for photography, a keen concept of time, and an impressive ability with computers including but not limited to hacking into computer databases and designing programs meant to analyze foreign objects and substances. He is shown to enjoy both canned black coffee and pizza with green peppers on it.
The second most dominant of the personalities answers to the name Jin, and is a very unfriendly man of starkly Japanese heritage. He claims to be a thief, and speaks very coarsely. He is loud and rude, swears often and likes getting into fights. He listens, for the most part, to Rei and sometimes Aya and Ken, though regularly scolds Yuu and seems to find him very irritating. He also has no recollection of an age or birth date, but is likely in his early twenties. Being that Jin is a thief, he is very good at stealth and covert operations, which is almost comical given how commonly loud and crude he tends to be. Jin is shown in the film to drink both sparkling water and Asahi beers, as well as eat sushi, though one can assume he probably enjoys most forms of traditional Japanese cuisine.
Next in line is Aya, the only female personality in the group. Aya is by far the kindest of the five, always worrying and taking care of the others to the best of her ability. She is a doctor of sorts, though not in a traditional sense. While she does seem adept at basic first aid and medical care, she seems to excel more at things like hypnosis and fortune-telling than true medicine. While she was the only personality in PIECE to have her true name revealed and thus be given a birth date and age (April of 1989, making her 25), Aya in Venture City would not have come to know who she actually is, nor either of these things. It's hard to tell if it's simply because she is the only female among them or if she is just flirtatious, but Aya also exhibits a marked tendency to be very, very friendly toward men. She is the personality that knows how to cook the best out of the four of them, often being the one to actually make what they all eat. She seems to enjoy fruity milk drinks and pastas.
Ken is easily the most level-headed of the group, save for perhaps Rei himself, and is probably also the oldest. He is a scientist, a man of few words and great intelligence, and seems to have the patience of a saint when dealing with both Yuu and Jin. Again, Ken recalls no specific birth date or age, and is by far the quietest of the personalities. He really only seems to come forward when his expertise or intelligence is needed, providing short, concise answers to all questions and complaints directed toward him. When in the movie Rei's left wrist is partially turned to stone by Kitamura Futaba, Ken is the one to immediately peel some of the skin off from the site of the contact for a tissue sample, claiming that they are the treasured specimens and reveling in the ability to learn more about the situation, whereas Jin just complains that it hurts and Yuu complains about not being able to hold a game controller this way. Ken's drink and food of choice are probably the strangest combination, given he is shown in the movie to drink Red Bull and canned corn.
Finally there is Yuu, who is very self-centered and childish. It is never exactly stated in the movie if he is just very young-minded or if he is actually a child, but I operate under the assumption that he is in fact very young. He shows little interest in most of the plot of the movie, complaining that it is boring and only showing interest in games. He has an impressive skill in throwing stones, leading one to assume that he has a high level of accuracy, and is also shown to enjoy puzzles. He drinks orange juice and eats omurice in the movie, and seems to enjoy drowning aforementioned omurice in ketchup.
Tying this all back to Rei, he seems largely unbothered by his "condition". He rolls with the shifts between personalities, apologizing for Jin's rudeness and Aya's brazen flirting in a mild, almost uncaring fashion, easily giving Yuu reasons to find things he finds boring more interesting to keep him entertained, and overall just sort of dealing with the fact that he's crazy like it doesn't matter at all. In the film, when Tomoki mentions he wants to meet Rei to talk to him about the photos he had taken of one of the Gorgon murders, his editor laughs and says that he's met with Rei several times but he s very, very strange. One can assume from this response that Rei is somewhat accustomed to people coming to him to ask questions but thinking he's very odd and never actually lingering. He's very much a loner, but doesn't seem to mind overmuch. This could very easily be due to the fact that he has five personalities so he's never really alone to begin with.
Powers:
Rei has a small collection of powers that aren't especially fantastical or outlandish spread out amongst his five personalities. He is never consciously aware of using them, figuring they are just quirks or abilities that any given person could have. Seeing as he doesn't remember that he is technically a Super, he has a communicator, but is under the assumption that it's not his and he just found it. It should be noted that all of the powers across the five of them are only effective through contact, which commonly negates most of them since Rei doesn't spend much time around people or really go around touching a bunch of shit.
Rei himself is a technopath, with the ability to understand the functionality of any given computer or machine he comes into contact with. His technopathy also allows him an ability to be very adept at hacking into databases, though this is not a skill he uses often. If given the opportunity to learn to properly use his technopathy he could likely fully control machines, but he's never cared to try.
Jin has the ability to pick virtually any lock. If he touches it, he can figure out how to unlock it. This works best on physical locks and not digital codes, though with Rei's technopathy in mind they can probably crack most of those, too.
Aya has something of a mild telepathy stint-- if her hands touch the skin of another person she has the ability to hypnotize them and see their thoughts and memories. She also has the ability through contact to understand and treat nearly any ailment or injury, though this extends only to anyone other than herself and the rest of Rei's personalities.
Ken is basically just really smart, especially with regards to sciences, though if he comes into contact with something he has a heightened ability to understand it from a scientific standpoint. For instance, without having to specifically analyze the tissue with any shown substances or machinery, he was able to tell that when touched by Kitamura Futaba, Rei's skin became necrotic due to nutrients in the tissue being hydrolyzed too rapidly.
Yuu is immensely adept at puzzles and games relating to them, able to solve even very difficult puzzles in alarmingly short periods of time once he has had the chance to touch them. He also has impeccable aim, which relates back to his ability with puzzles-- he can track the specific trajectory of a projectile once he comes into contact with it in order to have it hit its mark very nearly every time.
